The first stage of a retail analytics system is the data. Usually this is done by unobtrusively placed sensors that can show where people have gone in-store, how many of them have done so, and other behaviours. Through using tools such as height measurement, it is also possible to make an estimate of the numbers of adults vs children that made up the total store visits, giving a more accurate picture of how many potential customers visited.

This data can then be compared against the number of sales the store made during the same period of time, giving us the first major piece of information, the store conversion rate - what proportion of potential customers entering the store actually made a purchase?
